The Third Device

A blog about the iPad.

iPads in Singapore

Today is going to be the day I seriously look around and shop for stuff, but based on a casual sampling of gadget and electronic stores I’ve seen since arriving last Wednesday, the iPad is not yet easy to find here in Singapore.

One small gadget store in VivoCity had a 16gb WiFi model for sale at around SGD $1200. Another shop in Funan had no iPads but was selling an original Apple iPad dock for SGD $150! That’s a pretty hefty markup – almost 90 USD for something that should retail at 30 USD.

Most other shops have a small selection of generic sleeves, screen protectors and faux leather binders just so they can say that they carry iPad accessories. However, there’s really nothing worth picking up, at least not that I can see.

Will report back tonight and see if I come across anything worthwhile.

Interesting side note: yesterday my wife and I had breakfast at a coffee shop around the corner from our hotel. There was only one other customer in the shop and all three of us were reading on our iPads while having breakfast.

In a few years, this will probably be an ordinary sight but for now it’s still pretty remarkable.
